Episode Synopsis
While the Andromeda Ascendant continues to undergo repairs, Dylan takes Beka, Tyr and Trance on the Maru in search of Isabella Ortiz, a great leader who would make a powerful advocate for a new Commonwealth. Kalderans had destroyed her government, and her whereabouts are unknown. Trance speculates that Ortiz can be found at Svorog's Anvil, the planet hardest hit by the Kalderans.
The group makes its way to the Broken Hammer, a bar in the mining outpost. There, they meet the owner, Saphia. Several patrons are in the bar, including a pregnant woman named Jadis. Dylan shows Saphia a picture of Ortiz and is told that her name is Cory, a doctor who has an office set up in a back room of the bar. Just then, Gorejon arrives, demanding a landing fee for the Maru. Cory enters, and when Dylan approaches her, Gorejon goes for his gun to protect her, and is shot in the knee by Beka. Dylan and Saphia convince everyone to put their weapons away. Cory asks another patron, Hsigo, to help move Gorejon into her office. She snaps at Dylan when he tries to speak to her, and goes off to tend to Gorejon's wound.
Saphia enters with Dylan, who hands over his force lance. Gorejon leaves to keep an eye on the bar. Cory insists she is not Ortiz, but Dylan is persistent. Finally, Cory explains that Ortiz is dead, and she has taken on her identity to keep medical supplies coming in. Saphia hired Gorejon to keep Cory safe. They are interrupted by the sound of a Kalderan patrol craft coming in for a landing. Suddenly, everyone is knocked to the ground by a mortar. Cory finally admits to Dylan that she is indeed Ortiz.
Dylan and Tyr leave the Broken Hammer to distract Kalderan artillery with their force lances. Dylan is slightly wounded, and returns to the Broken Hammer. Meanwhile, Trance comforts the pregnant Jadis, but then confronts Hsigo when he suggests turning Cory over to the Kalderans. Suddenly, gunfire erupts, killing a miner. Gorejon goes to protect Saphia, and is gunned down. Trance is distraught when her tail is shot off by an energy blast. Cory takes Trance into the back to tend to her wound. Up front, Dylan orders Beka and Hsigo to stand watch. He orders the rest of the patrons to make a clear path from the door to the bar, and works with Saphia putting together grenades with ammonia and chlorine.
While everyone continues working on setting up their defenses, Dylan checks on Trance, who eventually passes out from painkillers. Once more, gunshots erupt as Tyr makes his way back to the Broken Hammer. Jadis starts to panic, and Saphia gives her Gorejon's gun and instructs her to do whatever she needs to protect her baby. Cory comes from the back room demanding to know what Saphia is doing. Suddenly, a shot rings out, killing Cory. Everyone is stunned to see that Jadis is the one that killed her. Jadis orders Dylan and Saphia to deliver the body to the Kalderans so that they can all put an end to this. Trance distracts Jadis long enough for Dylan to get the gun away from her.
Dylan orders Trance to take Jadis into the back room. Dylan reassures Saphia that she is not to blame for Cory's death. Saphia insists that it is her responsibility, and goes to the back room to tell Jadis that Cory would forgive her for what she did. Dylan demands to speak with Saphia alone. He tells her that he finds it interesting that Cory and Gorejon always seemed to look to her before making any decisions. Saphia admits that she is Ortiz, and that Cory was a corpsman who took on her identity as a form of protection.
Dylan returns to the front and informs Tyr that Ortiz is alive and well. He makes the decision to turn Cory's body over to the Kalderans, to buy them some time. Hsigo is angered to learn that Saphia is the real Ortiz, but is gunned down before he has the opportunity to shoot her. Dylan comes to the conclusion that Hsigo, who arrived to the planet about a week before the Maru landed, was the Kalderans' inside man. Saphia wants to turn herself over to the Kalderans, but Dylan stops her, telling her that they're not done fighting yet.
The Kalderans take away Cory's body. Back in the bar, a group of Kalderans show up and gunfire ensues. After a fierce battle, the patrons of the Broken Hammer are victorious. Dylan tells Jadis that she can never make up for killing Cory, but she can start by raising her child in the right way. He then tells Saphia that he'll inform the Sinti Board of Directors that Ortiz is dead. Saphia agrees to go with him back to the Andromeda, and is awestruck by its power. She admits to Dylan that it feels good to be back in the fight.
