2.01 The Widening Gyre

With the ship severely damaged, Dylan leads the crew of the Andromeda Ascendant in a battle against the largest and deadliest enemy they have ever encountered.

Episode Synopsis

As the Andromeda Ascendant lies heavily damaged, having been attacked by the gigantic Magog Worldship, Dylan, Beka, and Trance lie unconscious on the floor of Command. Rommie remains pinned to a wall, as Rev Bem searches for a wounded Tyr and Harper in the Magog Worldship. Beka regains consciousness and successfully administers CPR to Dylan. The Andromeda AI informs Beka that Trance is dead, but Beka ignores the hologram and pulls on Trance's tail, startling her awake. Beka then collapses. Meanwhile, Rommie frees herself from the wall she's pinned to, and instructs Trance to get Dylan and Beka to Medical while she distracts any Magog remaining on the ship.

The Andromeda AI sends two androids to help Trance move Dylan and Beka to Medical, but before they can leave Command, Magog start to attack the door. Rommie calls two planetary warfare bots into action to stop them. While making their way to Medical, Trance comes face to face with three Magog. She holds them off for a moment as Rommie arrives and saves her. Rommie then takes off in the opposite direction to distract the remaining Magog. Back in Medical, a recovering Dylan reveals his plans to the remaining crew members. He and Rommie then take the Maru down to the Magog Worldship to rescue Tyr, Harper, and Rev Bem.

On the Magog Worldship, Harper regains consciousness and quickly realizes that he has been infested with Magog eggs. Tyr, who has also regained consciousness, tries to think of a plan of escape. Continuing his search for Harper and Tyr, Rev Bem has disguised himself as a Magog leader. However, he raises suspicion among Magog warriors when he refuses to partake in eating of captured prey. He is tormented by a Magog named Bloodmist, who pursues him through the tunnels of the Worldship. Bloodmist offers to show Rev Bem the truth about the Magog way of life, and promises to release Harper and Tyr for Rev Bem to do with as he pleases. In the meantime, Dylan and Rommie land the Maru inside the Worldship and begin their search, but they must hurry before the scheduled detonation a Nova Bomb from the Andromeda. With only twenty minutes to go, Dylan establishes vocal contact with Harper, telling him to make as much noise as possible so that they can find them. The screaming echoes through the chambers, leading Dylan and Rommie to a dead end. Harper and Tyr fight off several Magog, and are confronted by Bloodmist and Rev Bem.

Beka, meanwhile, goes into Virtual Reality to witness the last time Andromeda faced the Magog Worldship, to avoid making the same mistake twice. Beka starts the preparations to arm the Nova Bomb. Trance reassures Beka that she will make the right decision. Beka gives the command to bring the ship in closer at top speed, and to fire every available weapon, then orders the launch of the Nova Bomb. Upon impact, the firepower of the Nova Bomb races through the chambers, and is drawn in internally by the shadowy Magog leader known as The Abyss. Only those immediately around the Abyss are killed by the Nova Bomb. Beka can hardly believe her eyes when she views the Magog Worldship, still intact. Bloodmist laughs at the attempt of the Andromeda to destroy them, but his laugh is cut short when Rev Bem plunges his raised claws into his chest, killing him. As Harper, Tyr and Rev Bem make their way through the corridors, they come across Dylan and Rommie. The five escape to the Maru, where they witness the Abyss vanish in the agony of the firepower it took in from the bomb. The Andromeda is about to go into slipstream when it detects that the Maru has launched from the Worldship.

Once away from the Worldship, everyone begins their recovery process. However, the news is not entirely good for Harper. Trance is unable to remove the Magog eggs from inside him. She gives him a drug that will keep the larvae dormant until she can find a way to successfully remove them. Dylan's wounds continue to heal, and Beka tells him the news that the Worldship is already busy working on creating a new sun. Rommie estimates that it will take about two years before it's fully operational, and ready to strike out again. The news makes Dylan and the crew more determined than ever to renew the Commonwealth, as The Abyss reforms itself.
