1.08 The Banks of the Lethe

Finally, after 300 years and a black hole keeping them apart, Captain Dylan Hunt reunites with his true love, Sara.

Episode Synopsis

In a contemplative mood while on a research mission with the Perseids to study the black hole the Andromeda had been trapped in, Dylan's mind is filled with thoughts of his fiancée and their life together. They were separated when the Andromeda was caught in the black hole and the Commonwealth was subsequently destroyed, leaving Sara and her ship, the Starry Wisdom, in the past and catapulting the Andromeda Ascendant and Dylan into the future. Many lifetimes now separate them.

On the Andromeda, Harper is experimenting with the concept of teleportation. Harper explains to Dylan that it could eventually teleport humans from place to place and maybe even the entire ship.

A long-range signal is received and Dylan realizes that somehow the message is coming from the Starry Wisdom -- from the past. Using the teleportation device they first send a holographic image of Dylan back 298 years to the Starry Wisdom. Sara and her crew are startled by the image of Dylan Hunt they see before them. The look on Sara's face shows great pain and happiness at the same time. Her love, for whom she has been searching for two years, has come back to her. She asks him how he got there. Dylan does not answer her question, but rather smiles and tells her how much he has missed her.

During their conversation the Starry Wisdom is suddenly shaken by enemy fire. Nietzscheans are attacking. The crew scrambles to recover from the blasts. Dylan takes over command of the Starry Wisdom. The Starry Wisdom sends the enemy ship hurling out of orbit with a few returns of fire on the command of Dylan. The crew cheers for Dylan's quick thinking. The holographic image of Dylan Hunt disappears and a teary-eyed Sara returns to the command the Starry Wisdom.

Back in the future, the Dylan is ready to make the leap back into the past. Realizing the risk he is taking, he readies himself to be teleported. Harper scans Dylan's body and stores it into the memory of the computer. Dylan disappears from the ship and safely travels back into the past. The real Dylan Hunt materializes and wastes no time in gently touching Sara's face.

Sara has found a way to bring the Andromeda Ascendant out of the event horizon of the black hole where, in this time, it has been trapped for two years. Dylan is wary of the plan but agrees to hear her suggestion. The plan is possible and the crew starts preparing for what seems to be the impossible; bringing the Andromeda Ascendant home.

A transmission from the "future" Andromeda comes in saying they too are being attacked by Nietztscheans. Dylan has had a wonderful time with Sara in the past but now he must decide to stay or to help his "future" crew. Sara does not want him to go and says they can still try to bring the Andromeda home. However, the Starry Wisdom's own run-in with the Neiztscheans has diminished their ability to be able to extract the Andromeda from the black hole.

Harper tells Dylan that if he wants to come back to the "future," he must do it now or else the data used in the teleportation will be lost. Dylan suggests bringing Sara with him. Harper stresses that it would be dangerous because only Dylan's data is stored in the computer and hers is not. She can take her chances but she might be lost in space forever and die. Dylan decides that it is too risky for Sara to even attempt to go back with him. She does not understand why he would not want to stay with her.

Dylan realizes that his mission is to restore the Commonwealth back to glory and he cannot achieve this in the past. He must live his life in the future and she must live hers in the past. Dylan returns to Andromeda and saves his crew from the Nieztscheans.
